Join artist, & printmaker Kathryn Desforges for an informal artist talk & demonstration of Japanese Woodblock Printing (Mokuhanga). In 2018 Kathryn undertook a six-week artist residency in Japan to learn the technique from master printmakers. In this session she will talk about her own practice and her time in Japan, show some recent work, and demonstrate the Mokuhanga process.
Kathryn’s work is rooted in a fascination with her surroundings, and is often the result of an unspoken dialogue between her and a particular place – real or imaginary. Presence, memory, temporality, and finding the sublime in the ordinary are ideas which repeatedly arise. Corners, shadows, architecture, landscapes, and moments of stillness are a constant source of inspiration. Using drawing, photography and film, she documents her surroundings with the aim of making a connection to her everyday environment – to explore it more deeply, or to reconnect with a particular moment which passed by all too quickly. Printmaking and collage are then used as mediums to form, distil and abstract, keeping experimentation and the physical act of making at the core of her practice. www.kathryndesforges.co.uk
